Seals, Pilgrims and Pirates: Blue Claw Boat Tours in Cape Cod

By Shannon Entin

With the record-setting amounts of snowfall dumped in the Northeast this winter, I’ve been dreaming of summer and reminiscing about our trip to Cape Cod last year. One of the highlights was our seal tour with Blue Claw Boat Tours.

On a foggy, chilly day in early June, my kids and I arrived at the dock in East Orleans to meet up with Captain Rob Wissmann. We boarded with one other family of five – the small boat makes for an intimate experience and allows interaction and ample opportunity to ask questions. Captain Rob gave us an introduction to what we’d be seeing. After he pulled out a big map (I love maps!) and detailed where we would go and the highlights we’d see, I knew it was going to be the kind of trip that I loved – full of historical adventure stories and amazing sights.

The one hour and 30 minute tour took place in bay and harbor waters, so we didn’t get out on open seas where the possibility of rough seas and sea-sickness occurs. Even in less than perfect weather, Captain Rob made our trip feel sunny and comfortable.

The tour began in East Orleans and cruised through Pleasant Bay to Chatham Harbor. Along the way, Captain Rob’s storytelling abilities made history come alive. We were brought back in time as we learned of pirates and pilgrims and buried treasure. In addition to the fun of seeing the seals, the tour was a solid introduction to the history of the Cape Cod area.

But then – the seals!

The kids thrilled, giggled, and pointed as we came upon dozens of seals bobbing in the water. As Captain Rob told us, the seals were as interested in us and we were in them. They came rather close to the boat and peered curiously at us with their adorable wet faces.

As the tour continued, there were many more seals to spot, as well as fishing boats, privately-owned islands, and beautiful waterfront homes.

Blue Claw Boat Tours is happy to create a custom tour for your family or group. Bring your own refreshments and relax on a sunset cruises, or try a 2.5 hour beachcombing tour that allows you to get off at a beach for shell-collecting. Once we thaw out from this crazy winter, Captain Rob will be waiting to take your family on an adventure.

Disclosure: My family received complimentary tickets to Blue Claw Boat Tours. All opinions are my own.
