This Girl Travels to Wolfeboro, NH – the Oldest Summer Resort in America

By Paula Schmitt

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer…that was the tune I was humming this summer as I spent two glorious weeks on Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, NH – the Oldest Summer Resort in America. One of my favorite places to be.

The small town of Wolfeboro, NH can be described as a quaint New England village, nestled among the scenic eastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee.  A popular tourist destination in the summer months with sailing, kayaking, and fishing, this picturesque community also enjoys a winter wonderland, a blossoming spring and beautiful New England autumn colors.

Wolfeboro has no shortage of great places to dine.  A few of our favorites, El Centario Mexican cuisine on Union Street. Fun atmosphere and good service, not to mention, excellent food and prices.  Another spot for delicious food, Jo Green’s Garden Café on Dockside Street, with breathtaking views of the lake and friendly service.  After dinner who could resist a sweet, cold, summer treat? Not I, and Bailey’s Bubble on Railroad Avenue was my choice for dessert. Serving the best creamy soft ice cream and tasty homemade hard ice cream with homemade sauces to top it off.

In Wolfeboro you will find a myriad of shops, art galleries and inns. Black’s Gift Shop on South Main Street has everything imaginable, from toys and games to gifts for adults on your list as well. The Country Bookseller on North Main Street is a full service, general bookshop offering WIFI and a coffee bar with espresso and gelato. We wanted to rent kayaks during our stay and Dive Winnipesaukee on North Main Street provided just what we needed. The Wolfeboro Inn on North Main Street is a stunning 1812 inn with spacious suites all with private baths. Their facilities include Wolfe’s Tavern, 1812 Steakhouse, a ballroom, library and private beach.

Overall, I highly recommend adding Wolfeboro, NH to your travel list. Whether a romantic getaway, a fun-filled family vacation, or a quiet retreat from hectic city life, Wolfeboro, NH has it all. I will certainly return and already have a visit planned for our next summer getaway.
