Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom Review

I love Disneynature films. Me and my family enjoy connecting with the animals and following along with the stories that are so informative and educational. And for this particular Disneynature movie that takes place deep in the jungle of Sri Lanka and swung into theaters on Earth Day, we got to meet a tribe of Macaque monkeys that live in “Castle Rock” and followed them on a once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Monkey Kingdom

The movie begins in the ancient ruins of Sri Lanka where we meet a tribe of Macaque monkeys and learn about the hierarchy in this particular tribe. Maya, our heroin, is at the bottom of the social chain in the Macaque hierarchy. She is a single mother who wants a better life for her adorable baby Kip and will do whatever it takes to protect and care for him.

Next we met Kumar, a young male who is an unwelcome guest in the tribe. He attempts to court Maya but is chased away by the alpha male, Raja, who wants Maya all for himself. My daughter and I missed Kumar so much after he had to leave Maya and even more when we learned he had left his son, Kip, as well. We were excited to see further into the film that Kumar comes back and makes a plan to get back with his family, wins over the alpha male and lives right where he wants to be – with his companion, Maya and his son, Kip.

The movie features a rich variety of characters, including simple-minded Langur monkeys, monitor lizards and predatory leopards. The film is narrated by Tina Fey, directed by Mark Linfield and co-directed by Alastair Fothergill. The music, that really fit well with the monkeys, was from award-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams.

My thoughts

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Monkeys are extremely smart and interesting creatures and I enjoyed following along on their journey and learning about the Macaque tribe. I especially was amazed with the empowering courage and love of Maya, determined to do more for her son and take risks, all so he could have a better future.
